📘 Project: “Milo Whiskerleaf and the Garden Song”
AI-assisted children’s storybook – illustration + storytelling + creative tech
🌱 Overview
This case study presents a complete creative process of making an illustrated children’s book with the help of generative AI tools.
It showcases a soft, emotionally engaging visual style, consistent character development, and storytelling fully adapted for a young audience — with a focus on human-led direction and AI-assisted execution.
💡 Idea / Problem
How can an independent illustrator with storytelling skills build a full character-based book — fast, visually consistent, emotionally rich — without a full studio team?
The goal: test how AI can assist (not replace) a human creator in a story-driven illustration pipeline.
Key focus:
Maintaining visual consistency across scenes
Keeping full creative control over character style & emotions
Matching illustrations to story rhythm
Making the final result emotionally resonant for children age 3+
🧠 Tools Used
ChatGPT – story development, creative structure, poetic text
MidJourney / Google Imagen / Runway – style testing, character exploration
Runway Gen-2 – animation (Milo waving video)
Figma / Canva – book layout, text integration, presentation
Photoshop – detail retouch, layer adjustments
ArtStation – case presentation
🎨 Creative Process
1. 🎭 Character Exploration
Over 40 versions were tested to find the ideal expression for Milo Whiskerleaf — a soft, orange anthropomorphic cat with magical presence.
We tested various outfits, eye shapes, fur textures, and postures before selecting the final look.
👉 See examples in the “Character Variants” section.
2. 📖 Story Writing
Written as a rhymed poem for early-age children (3+), the story builds musical rhythm, emotional interaction, and friendly conflict-free dynamics.
3. 🖼️ Illustration Matching
Each illustration was generated based on character preservation, story alignment, pose variation, and environmental harmony. Prompts were precisely engineered to reflect same style, same light, same design language.
Scene-to-scene continuity was ensured manually.
4. 🎞️ Animation (optional)
One short scene was brought to life using Runway Gen-2, where Milo gently waves at the viewer and says “Hello!” — perfect for interactive digital versions of the book.
📘 Final Output
A 5-scene children’s book in both horizontal & vertical layout
Character-focused design system (1 character, 5 expressions, 5 poses)
Ready-to-publish digital version (PDF & web)
Optional motion content (short waving scene)
Full AI-assisted process under human creative direction
🧩 Outcome
This project demonstrates how generative tools can support illustrators and authors in storytelling without compromising on artistic quality or emotional resonance.
The creative control stays in human hands — AI simply amplifies execution.
